About The Position

The Veterinary Technician III provides direct primate research support at the professional level and takes charge of the health and safety of a primate colony. This role involves preparing, monitoring, and recovering primates during anesthesia and paralysis for adaptive optics imaging, which requires specific positioning, eye preparation, physiological monitoring, and adjustment of anesthesia planes. The position is also responsible for the health of a non-human primate colony (marmosets), including monitoring and decision-making regarding post-operative complications. Additionally, the role ensures primates are comfortable with the colony and acclimated to behavioral experiments, may assist in training primates, and maintains health and safety practices in accordance with University policy and law. The position also coordinates purchasing for non-human primate research, including equipment repair, supply requisitioning, and minor construction, and may recommend or authorize expenditures. Furthermore, the role involves designing or collaborating in the design of research equipment and evaluating its performance. Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in Veterinary Technology required
  • Four years as a practicing licensed veterinary technician with extensive surgical and anesthetic experience preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in a biomedical research facility preferred.
  • Knowledge of Federal and State Animal Welfare Regulations and current veterinary care standards required by AAALAC, International and NIH preferred.
  • Current NY state professional license as a veterinary technician required.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct primate research support at the professional level and takes charge of the health and safety of a primate colony.
  • Prepares, monitors and recovers primates during anesthesia and paralysis for adaptive optics imaging. This involves primate specific positioning in a custom stereotaxic cart, contact lens placement and eye preparation, close physiological monitoring and adjustment of plane of anesthesia for several hours and recovery.
  • Responsible for the health of a non-human primate colony (marmosets), which includes monitoring and decision making surrounding post-operative complications in primates that have received eye surgery.
  • Ensures primates are comfortable with colony and acclimated to performing behavioral experiments with primates. May help in training primates in specific behavioral tasks.
  • Insures that health and safety practices are maintained in accordance with University policy and the law.
  • Coordinates purchasing for non-human primate research: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials and minor construction. May recommend expenditures for laboratory equipment and authorize expenditures for expendable supplies.
  • Designs or collaborates in designing research equipment. Evaluates the performance of research equipment, making or recommending correctional design changes or developing new approaches for its use.
  • Provides veterinary care to research animals.
  • Inspects research animals housed by URMC.
  • Monitors health status of research animals.
  • Evaluates and implements a diagnosis and treatment plan for sick or injured animals.
  • Participates in collecting biological samples on a variety of species.
  • Provides routine care, such as vaccinations and parasite control.
  • Keeps detailed and accurate records of health evaluations and surgical procedures.
  • Participates in the training of others in biomethodology and required skills.
  • Works in the area of the rodent health-monitoring program.
  • Performs various diagnostic procedures.
  • Emergency duties required during adverse weather and/or other emergency situations.
