About The Position
Leidos has an immediate need for a Veterinary Technician I to support the Naval Medical Research Unit San Antonio (NAMRU-SA) in San Antonio TX. NAMRU-SA serves as one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy and conducts gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of Department of Defense (DoD) personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations. This role involves unique and exciting work in a demanding environment.
Requirements
- High School Diploma/GED plus 2 years of related experience OR Veterinary Technician Associates Degree plus 6 months of related experience
- Willingness to work towards obtaining ALAT certification
- Ability to obtain and maintain required life-support certifications (AHA BLS, Healthcare Provider Course, or American Red Cross CPR; web-based courses not accepted)
- Willingness to complete annual occupational health exams to maintain facility access clearance
- US citizenship is required due to Federal contract requirements.
- The candidate will be required to acquire, at a minimum, a SECRET classification access level.
Nice To Haves
- Laboratory animal science experience preferred
- Candidate who already has SECRET clearance level
Responsibilities
- Daily handling and restraint of various small and large animal species
- Conduct and support surgical procedures, operating room maintenance, animal disease prevention and health surveillance, appropriate animal housing, record keeping, and specific pathogen-free techniques
- Maintain traffic patterns, sterile equipment, pest control, and quality assurance procedures
- Conduct daily and weekly inspections to ensure compliance with standards
- Assist in preparation of purchase requests to include animal procurement and coordination of shipping procedures
- Assist with maintenance of inventory supplies
- Supports coordination of animal research work activities between contractors, scientists, animal care staff and research laboratory technicians
