About The Position

Join the Department of Agriculture as a Veterinary Medical Field Officer. The role includes direct work with horses before, during, and after races to ensure fitness, safety, and adherence to racing rules.

Requirements

  • One year of professional experience as a veterinarian
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or a Veterinariae Medicinae Doctoris (VMD) from an American Veterinary Medical Association accredited college or university
  • Possession of an active license to practice veterinary medicine as issued by a State Board of Veterinary Medicine
  • Must obtain an active license to practice veterinary medicine issued by the Pennsylvania State Board of Veterinary Medicine within six months of hire
  • Must obtain United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Category II Accreditation within six months of hire

Responsibilities

  • Observe horses throughout race events and determine physical fitness for competition
  • Supervise blood and urine sample collection, bleeder medication activities, and Lasix program procedures
  • Provide first aid, treat injuries, and support decisions regarding euthanasia when necessary
  • Maintain lists, reports, and documentation for inspections, injuries, and veterinary findings
  • Assist with enforcing racing rules, resolving eligibility concerns, and reporting violations
  • Perform pre-race examinations and evaluate horses for signs of illness, injury, or unsoundness
