Veterinary Externship

AmeriVet•Fayetteville, NC

About The Position

Highland Animal Hospital offers a hands-on, two-week externship for fourth-year veterinary students who want to build clinical experience through repetition, mentorship, and a high-quality, high-volume caseload. Students with rotations of a different length may still be accommodated. The program is intended for students exploring where to begin their careers and gives both the student and hospital an opportunity to assess whether they are a good fit. The hospital describes the externship as a two-week interview for both parties and hopes it may lead to a career at the practice. Externs learn alongside four senior veterinarians with more than 60 years of combined clinical experience. The program includes direct mentorship, frequent case discussions, surgical exposure, and progressive responsibility appropriate to the student’s experience. The hospital’s stated goal is to help students become confident clinicians who can think independently while prioritizing patients. Travel expenses and housing are provided; details are available upon request. Highland Animal Hospital reports approximately 32,000 patient visits and 2,200 surgeries annually, along with approximately 88 dental procedures and 30 TPLO surgeries each month. AmeriVet describes its broader approach as supporting team members’ growth, development, well-being, and success through development programs, mentorship, career pathing, and other resources. The listed benefits apply to full-time employees.
