About The Position

Animal Medical Services is seeking an associate veterinarian for their mixed animal practice located in Mount Airy, North Carolina, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Founded in 1966, the practice emphasizes family and community, aiming to be an integral part of a patient's family. They have a second location 30 miles away in Galax, Virginia. The practice serves a diverse range of patients and clientele, with a workload that allows for specialization. They offer cutting-edge medicine and medical/surgical services for small animals, equine, food animals, and basic exotic care/wildlife rehabilitation. The practice is supported by 5 doctors and a 22-member support staff, including licensed veterinary technicians. Emergency services are offered due to a large animal caseload, with flexibility on emergency call duties. Referrals can be made to a specialty clinic and the VA-MD Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from an accredited AVMA institution.
  • Appropriate state licensure.
  • Eligibility to obtain DEA/BNDD.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates professional and courteous presentation consistently with staff and clients.
  • Ability to lift patients and carry equipment up to 25 pounds; ability to lift patients or carry equipment over 25 pounds with assistance.

Nice To Haves

  • Ideally, a mixed animal practitioner, but specialization is possible.

Responsibilities

  • Examine and treat companion animals to detect and determine the nature of disease or injuries.
  • Operate diagnostic equipment and collect diagnostic samples as well as interpret results.
  • Advise pet owners on preventative care and treatment options.
  • Perform surgery and prescribe medication as needed.
  • Provide counsel around pet end of life care.
  • Maintain patients’ medical records.
  • Ensures compliance with veterinary ethics and relevant statues, policies, and procedures.
