About The Position

The Veterinarian – Substitute Instructor provides high-quality instructional coverage and ensures the effective delivery of the Veterinary Technician program curriculum during regular faculty absences. This role is essential for maintaining standard classroom and lab continuity, ensuring student safety, and upholding animal care standards in compliance with AVMA, USDA, and IACUC regulations.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Current and active state licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Colorado.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a practicing veterinarian in a clinical, hospital, or shelter environment.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to adapt quickly to different classroom environments.
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office) and visual presentation tools.

Responsibilities

  • Step in to deliver scheduled lectures, execute established lesson plans, and conduct practical clinical demonstrations in lab settings.
  • Monitor and assess student progress during hands-on labs, signing off on skill-level checklists and lab competencies.
  • Mentor students individually during coverage shifts to support their clinical skill development and ensure learning objectives are met.
  • Enforce all strict safety, OSHA, and sanitation protocols in the classroom, laboratory, and animal handling environments.
  • Serve as the temporary "Attending Veterinarian" for the program's animals when covering primary faculty shifts.
  • Make necessary medical decisions for program patients during assignment, including diagnosing conditions, performing surgical/medical procedures, and developing treatment plans.
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests; ensure all medical records updated during your shift fully comply with AVMA, USDA, and IACUC standards.
  • Assist in maintaining full compliance with DEA licensing standards and meticulously document any controlled substance log entries during coverage.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student records for covered sessions, including daily attendance and grades.
  • Communicate effectively with the primary program faculty, Program Director, or campus leadership regarding student performance, attendance concerns, or lab supply needs.
