About The Position

Boulevard Pet Hospital is seeking an experienced and thoughtful Veterinarian Medical Director to lead their team and shape the future of their practice in Castro Valley, CA. This is a leadership role offering long-term growth support. The hospital is a small, 2-exam room facility equipped with advanced tools and technologies, focusing on pet wellness, preventative care, and a variety of cases including orthopedic and soft tissue surgery. They serve dogs, cats, pocket pets, and exotics, operating 5 days a week. The team consists of a Registered Vet Tech, a vet assistant, and one other DVM, and they are open to mentoring a less experienced veterinarian. The Medical Director will serve as the clinical leader, setting standards for medical quality, patient care, client experiences, and team culture. This role involves a balance of hands-on clinical practice (majority of time) and leadership responsibilities, guiding medical quality and supporting the professional growth of the veterinary team. In partnership with the Practice Manager, the MD will provide medical oversight of hospital operations to ensure exceptional outcomes and achieve performance goals.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree from an accredited university (required)
  • Compassionate, client-centered approach to care
  • Strong communication and client-education skills
  • Previous experience managing multi-doctor practice and or current work experience as Lead Veterinarian, Chief of Staff, or Medical Director strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Active licensure without restrictions in state of practice.
  • Active DEA Registration for responsible practice location(s).
  • Any required state-controlled substance, pharmacy or other licenses and/or registrations as required.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience as a practicing Veterinarian.
  • Preferred minimum of 1 year of experience leading a veterinary team and/or multi-unit experience.
  • Commit to a minimum of 35 hours per week.

Responsibilities

  • Set, model, and uphold medical quality standards for the practice.
  • Foster and sustain a positive, collaborative hospital culture.
  • Coach, mentor, and manage veterinarians.
  • Drive continuous improvement in medical quality, patient outcomes, and client trust.
  • Evaluate, develop, and continuously improve clinical competency across the veterinary team.
  • Organize and lead regular doctor meetings.
  • Partner closely with the Practice Manager to align on hospital initiatives, culture, people development, and medical and operational priorities.
  • Align hospital scheduling and clinical workflows to optimize team utilization.
  • Assess and manage the hospital inventory.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to the veterinary team.
  • Plan and participate in hospital-wide meetings.
  • Support strategic initiatives and operational excellence.
  • Oversee the maintenance, and appropriate use of hospital medical equipment.
  • Actively engage with the local community to strengthen the hospital’s presence and impact.
  • Collaborate with the Talent Acquisition team to recruit, interview, and onboard high-quality veterinary talent.
  • Serve as the Responsible Veterinarian, including oversight of necessary registrations and permits, controlled drug inventory, and radiation safety programs.
  • Actively practice a majority of their full-time schedule maintaining a robust patient caseload.
  • Serve as an Amerivet Ambassador, advocating for goals and values.
