About The Position

This position provides support to the Veterans Services Officer by assessing the needs of clients and offering assistance with processing claim forms. It is a full-time position working 40 hours per week, located onsite in the courthouse complex. The role involves working with confidential information, composing various correspondence and reports, operating complex office equipment, researching and summarizing information, interpreting departmental policies and procedures, and providing secretarial support. The position may also involve representing the manager or department at meetings and assisting boards and committees.

Requirements

  • Ability to successfully obtain USDVA (U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs) accreditation within 24 months of hire date.
  • Must possess a valid Oregon driver's license at the time of appointment.
  • Regular and consistent attendance.
  • Through knowledge of general office practices and procedures.
  • Considerable knowledge of Veterans claim processing and forms, recordkeeping, reporting, and software capabilities.
  • Skill in report writing and composing correspondence.
  • Skill in typing rapidly and accurately.
  • Skill in the use of complex office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms.
  • Ability to plan and organize office operations.
  • Ability to perform work independently within established policies and procedures.
  • Finalist will be required to provide a court print driving record that meets the Douglas County Driver Policy.
  • Finalist may be required to pass a criminal history background check.
  • Employment is contingent upon a pre-employment drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Four years of experience working in a VA Facility or County Veteran Service Office.
  • Accredited by USDVA through ODVA as a VSO for at least two (2) years or more.
  • Associates Degree and two (2) years of experience in a County Veteran Service Office or VA Facility or other Veteran related organization.
  • Bachelor's Degree in counseling or Veteran related field.
  • Four (4) years of Veteran related counseling or Veteran related field.
  • Preference will be given to Veterans who meet qualifications of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the needs of clients and offer assistance with processing claim forms.
  • Work with confidential information with a high degree of professionalism and remain calm in confrontational or high-pressure situations.
  • Type, design, and compose various correspondence, forms, graphics, and reports.
  • Operate a variety of complex office equipment, including computerized equipment.
  • Independently research, compile, and summarize information for reports or to address issues.
  • Prepare information for inclusion into reports.
  • Provide project and program management as assigned, including coordination with other agencies.
  • Interpret information requiring thorough knowledge of departmental policies, procedures, and statutory authority to the public and other departments.
  • May represent manager or department at meetings.
  • Provide assistance to boards and committees related to the department, including foundation support for donated funds.
  • Provide secretarial support as needed.
  • Coordinate incoming and outgoing information, paper-flow, calendars, and travel arrangements for the assigned manager.
  • Assist in coordinating and scheduling department or division activities and training.
