About The Position

The Veterans and Volunteers Coordinator is a part-time position (24-32 hours per week) that plays a vital dual role: connecting the organization with veteran communities in Emmet, Charlevoix, and Cheboygan counties and managing and growing the affiliate’s volunteer program. This position builds meaningful relationships with veterans, linking them to Habitat programs and additional community resources, while also overseeing the day-to-day coordination of volunteer activities to ensure a safe, welcoming, and impactful experience for all volunteers. This role is central to expanding Habitat’s community presence and strengthening the people-power behind its construction mission. This position requires regular flexibility to attend evening and weekend events, including veteran community gatherings and volunteer workdays, averaging two volunteer events per month.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to connect meaningfully with veterans, volunteers, and community partners.
  • Ability to manage multiple programs, relationships, and events simultaneously in a fast-paced, community-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently, as well as collaboratively with construction staff, program leadership, and external partners.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and sustain positive, trust-based relationships with veterans, volunteers, staff, and community organizations.
  • Commitment to understanding the broader mission of Habitat for Humanity and the vital role veterans and volunteers play in advancing it.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation required.
  • Willingness to regularly work outside of standard office hours.
  • Must pass a Criminal Background Check (convictions will be reviewed based on the seriousness of the crime; a conviction does not necessarily mean disqualification).
  • Must pass a Sexual Offender Check. Being listed will result in automatic disqualification from employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree or higher in social work, nonprofit management, communications, or a related field preferred.
  • Veterans or those who have direct prior experience working with veteran populations, communities, or service organizations are strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience in volunteer coordination, community outreach, or nonprofit program administration preferred.
  • Experience with volunteer management software or CRM databases is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Actively network with and engage veteran groups and organizations across Emmet, Charlevoix, and Cheboygan counties to build relationships and raise awareness of Habitat’s programs.
  • Attend and/or host booths at veteran community events to represent the organization and connect veterans with available resources and programs.
  • Work closely with Habitat Michigan to stay current on statewide and federal veteran services and initiatives, and collaborate with the Director of Programs to integrate these into local programming.
  • Work one-on-one with veterans in the community who are interested in Habitat’s programs, providing personalized guidance and helping them navigate the application process.
  • Connect veterans with additional benefits, services, and organizations as needed, serving as a knowledgeable and compassionate resource for the broader veteran community.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of all veteran contacts, referrals, and program participants.
  • Oversee day-to-day volunteer program administration, including scheduling, collecting required paperwork, conducting background checks, and maintaining organized volunteer files and databases.
  • Contact, orient, and place new volunteers based on information received through the volunteer registration form, ensuring a smooth and welcoming onboarding experience.
  • Create, maintain, and manage the volunteer database to ensure accurate records of new and returning volunteer information.
  • Oversee group volunteer days as assigned, typically two events per month on weekday evenings or weekends, including welcoming and checking in volunteers, providing site safety orientations, and working alongside volunteers during their shift.
  • Collaborate with the construction team to ensure volunteer sites are appropriately prepared, including reviewing timelines, confirming site location and needs, and setting up materials and tools for each work activity.
  • Seek out skilled volunteers to support specific construction efforts based on site needs, and nurture a positive environment where all volunteers feel engaged, valued, and connected to the mission.
  • Promote and grow ongoing volunteer partnerships with community businesses, service organizations, and individual community members.
  • Develop and implement a volunteer appreciation system that recognizes contributions and encourages long-term engagement.
  • Assist construction staff in developing volunteer orientation and training materials to ensure consistency and quality across all volunteer activities.
  • After appropriate training in the organization’s current volunteer management system, take full ownership of the volunteer program, with a target transition timeframe of 1 year from hire.
