About The Position

San Diego Humane Society is hiring a full-time Veterinary Assistant for its Oceanside Medical team. The role supports veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians with examining, treating, and caring for animals. It provides compassionate, personalized service in alignment with the SDHS Way and the organization’s mission to inspire compassion. The position is based at the Oceanside Campus and follows a 4/10 alternative work schedule. The starting pay range is $20.00–$22.25 per hour; actual pay depends on factors including relevant education and experience, internal pay equity, and position location.

Requirements

High school graduation or equivalent is required.
A valid California driver’s license is required.
Must be approved by the SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.

Nice To Haves

One year of clinical experience and/or shelter experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide medical care and monitor the health and welfare of animals under the direction of staff veterinarians.
Administer treatments, including oral and injectable medications, vaccines, and microchips.
Prepare surgery and prep rooms and clean them after procedures.
Maintain medical equipment, clean instruments, and order supplies as directed.
Keep surgical supplies, including packs, drapes, and gowns, up to date for everyday use.
Assist with surgeries and monitor animals before, during, and after surgery.
Assist with dental cleanings and routine laboratory tests, including fecal analysis, X-rays, blood work, and cytology.
Move animals to and from cages when treatment is required.
Assist with or perform euthanasia when required.
