About The Position

San Diego Humane Society is hiring a full-time Veterinary Assistant for its Oceanside Medical team. The role assists veterinarians and registered veterinary technicians with examining, treating, and caring for animals. It delivers service in alignment with the SDHS Way, meeting the needs of animals and the people who love them through compassion, creative solutions, personalized care, and connection. The position is based at the Oceanside Campus and follows a 4/10 alternative work schedule. Starting pay is $20.00–$22.25 per hour; the actual starting rate depends on factors including related education and experience, internal pay equity, and location.

Requirements

High school graduation or equivalent.
Valid California driver’s license.
Approval by the SDHS insurance carrier to drive a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.

Nice To Haves

One year of clinical experience and/or shelter experience preferred.

Responsibilities

Provide medical care and monitor the health and welfare of animals under staff veterinarians’ direction.
Administer treatments, including oral and injectable medications, vaccines, and microchips.
Set up preparation and surgery rooms and clean rooms after procedures.
Maintain medical equipment, clean instruments, and order supplies as directed.
Keep surgical supplies up to date for everyday use, including packs, drapes, and gowns.
Assist with surgeries and monitor animals before, during, and after surgery.
Assist with dental cleanings and routine laboratory tests, including fecal analysis, X-rays, blood work, and cytology.
Move animals to and from cages when treatment is required.
Assist with or perform euthanasia when required.
