Performs responsible skilled, technical work in supervising and participating in the servicing and maintenance of a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized equipment, including diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising the operation of the garage which is engaged in repairing and servicing a variety of vehicles and equipment. Work involves assigning work to the mechanics, participating in the work, ordering parts, quality control and preparing and maintaining records of repairs, parts inventory, and warranties. The employee performs cost analysis of repair options; prepares and monitors the budget; solicits repair estimates by outside garages; trains personnel; establishes and maintains vehicle history records and advises management on repair or replacement decisions for vehicles and equipment. The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed through observation, reports and the overall effectiveness of the work unit.
