About The Position

Performs responsible skilled, technical work in supervising and participating in the servicing and maintenance of a variety of automotive, construction, and specialized equipment, including diesel-powered vehicles and equipment. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising the operation of the garage which is engaged in repairing and servicing a variety of vehicles and equipment. Work involves assigning work to the mechanics, participating in the work, ordering parts, quality control and preparing and maintaining records of repairs, parts inventory, and warranties. The employee performs cost analysis of repair options; prepares and monitors the budget; solicits repair estimates by outside garages; trains personnel; establishes and maintains vehicle history records and advises management on repair or replacement decisions for vehicles and equipment. The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, vibration, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils. Work is performed under general supervision and reviewed through observation, reports and the overall effectiveness of the work unit.

Requirements

Thorough knowledge of the techniques, principles, equipment and tools related to the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and specialty equipment and related terminology.
Thorough knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and of related safety practices.
Working knowledge of the County's budgeting, purchasing, and personnel policies and procedures.
Working knowledge of office equipment.
Ability to supervise personnel and participate in selecting and assigning, monitoring and evaluating the work of others.
Ability to detect by inspection any broken or worn part and diagnose causes of defective operations.
Ability to prepare accurate and complete work orders, requisitions, and other related documents.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other County departments, employees, vendors and the general public.
Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
Must possess the visual acuity to operate machines and equipment, use measurement devices, fabricate and assemble parts, and to read, prepare, and use computer and manual records.
Graduation from a two year college with a major in automotive mechanics or related trades field and experience at the journey level mechanic including some experience in a lead worker capacity; or graduation from high school, supplemented by technical or vocational automotive/heavy equipment maintenance training and considerable experience in skilled automotive/heavy equipment repair work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Possession of a valid North Carolina commercial driver's license.

Nice To Haves

Knowledge of diesel engine systems and diesel-powered vehicle and equipment repair and maintenance preferred.
Diesel Engine (T2) endorsement or ASE diesel-related certification preferred but not required.
Experience with diesel engine repair and maintenance, or diesel mechanic certification/training, is preferred.

Responsibilities

Supervises and participates in the vehicle and fleet maintenance operation of the County; assigns work to other mechanics and office staff.
Monitors maintenance activities and participates in service/repair work, including diagnostics, repair, and preventive maintenance on diesel-powered vehicles and equipment.
Gives technical advice and assistance to mechanics; supervises and participates in the work on difficult jobs; inspects work in progress and upon completion for adherence to standards.
Coaches and counsels employees concerning performance; assists in hiring and conducting performance evaluations.
Prepares and maintains records of repairs and servicing; coordinates servicing schedule with drivers; coordinates warranty and contract work with outside vendors and manufacturers; orders parts for repairs.
Trouble shoots problems and determines most appropriate course of action and sets priorities for repair work.
Prepares and administers budget and maintains vehicle and equipment records to advise management when to replace vehicles based on operating and repair cost analysis.
Solicits prices and monitors the work of outside vendors.
Attends and participates in monthly Department Head meetings, quarterly Accident Review Board meetings, and other leadership meetings or committees as assigned.
Collaborates with department heads and County leadership to evaluate fleet needs, develop replacement strategies, and support County-wide operational initiatives.
