The NC Department of Transportation is hiring for multiple Vehicle/Equipment Repair Technician I (VERT I) positions in Division 4. These semi-skilled mechanic roles involve the repair of small engine, automotive, and heavy equipment. Responsibilities include a wide range of progressively responsible tasks such as service, inspection, repair, rebuild, and diagnosis of diverse mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. Technicians will perform moderately complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software, conduct parts/systems failure analysis, and determine appropriate materials, techniques, and tools. Specific recurring tasks include inspecting and replacing brake pads and shoes, replacing regulators, alternators, and belts, fitting or repairing aftermarket upgrades, and performing preventative maintenance on components like tires, wheels, cranking, lighting, cooling, and hydraulic systems. Employees may perform mechanic work at various levels and are required to work during adverse weather conditions, which may involve extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays.
