About The Position

This is an extended posting for Vehicle/Repair Technician I (VERT I) positions in Division 1, with multiple positions to be filled. The role involves semi-skilled mechanic work, focusing on small engine, automotive, and heavy equipment repair. Responsibilities include a wide range of progressively responsible tasks such as service, inspection, repair, rebuild, and diagnosis of diverse mechanical systems for gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment. The work encompasses inspection and service, as well as moderately complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software, and conducting parts/systems failure analysis. Positions require routinely determining materials, techniques, and tools for assignments, which vary in complexity. Specific tasks include inspecting and replacing brake pads and shoes, replacing regulators, alternators, and belts, fitting or repairing standard aftermarket upgrades, performing preventative maintenance, and repairing tires, tubes, wheels & rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems, and hydraulic systems. Employees may perform mechanic work at various levels.

Requirements

Ability to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date
Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire
No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years
No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years
Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.)
If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states.
Pass pre-employment drug testing
Sign a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing
Furnish a complete set of tools
Successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation
High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma or a sufficient year-for-year combination of education and experience in the repair work to which assigned; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
May require current certification by the EPA as a Type I, II, III or Universal technician as required by 40 CFR part 82, subpart F

Nice To Haves

Experience in the repair and replacement of tires
Experience in performing preventive maintenance on a minimum of one of the following: light, medium, heavy-duty trucks, and heavy equipment
Skill in the use of at least 2 tools and pieces of equipment used in the equipment shop such as wrenches, sockets, battery charger, hydraulic jacks, loader, forklift, automotive/truck lift, fuel service truck, tire changer, tire balancer, welder, cutting torch, diagnostic equipment, computer, tire jack, tire balance machine, pneumatic wrench, diagnostic gauges, electronic tester, air impact wrench, air compressor, air gun, torque wrench

Responsibilities

Perform semi-skilled small engine, automotive and heavy equipment repair
Service, inspect, repair, rebuild and diagnose diverse mechanical systems for a variety of gasoline, diesel, and alternative powered engines/equipment
Conduct moderately complex mechanical systems analysis using advanced diagnostic instruments and software
Conduct parts/systems failure analysis
Determine materials, techniques and tools to accomplish work assignments
Inspect and replace brake pads and shoes
Replace regulators, alternators and belts
Fit or repair standard aftermarket upgrades and equipment
Perform preventative maintenance
Repair tires and tubes, wheels & rims, cranking systems, lighting systems, cooling systems and hydraulic systems
Work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc.
