About The Position

Rio Vista High School is seeking a Varsity Softball Head Coach for the Spring 2027 season. The Head Coach is primarily responsible for ensuring their team complies with all rules, regulations, and policies governing athletics. This includes informing athletes of and ensuring their understanding of these policies. The coach is directly accountable to the Athletic Director and Administrator for the application of these rules. The Board of Trustees aims to employ highly qualified coaches to enhance the knowledge, skills, motivation, and safety of student athletes.

Requirements

  • Complete training certificates for the following courses: Sexual Harassment training, General Coaching Course, Sports Specific Course, Concussions in sports training, Sudden Cardiac Arrest training, Heat Acclimatization training, Bloodborne Pathogens training, Youth Suicide Prevention training, Title IX Protecting Students training, Asthma Awareness training, Social media for Sports training, Homeless Education training, Sportsmanship training, Bullying, Hazing training.
  • Negative TB Test
  • First Aid/CPR Certificate
  • Valid Drivers License
  • State of California Mandated Reporting training completion

Responsibilities

  • Serve as liaison between the coaching staff and the Athletic Director.
  • Maintain thorough knowledge of the Rules and By-Laws of the California Interscholastic Federation, the League, and the River Delta Unified School District as they pertain to the sport, including the clearance of all staff members and student-athletes.
  • Understand the proper administrative chain of command and refer all requests or grievances through proper channels. Be aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by the staff. Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Train and inform staff and encourage professional growth by promoting clinic attendance.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and at season’s end analyze staff effectiveness and evaluate all assistants.
  • Maintain discipline, mediate grievances, and work to increase morale.
  • Assist the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation needs and requirements for all games, tournaments, and special sports events.
  • Assist in the necessary preparation for scheduled home sports contests or practices and adhere to scheduled facility usage times.
  • Coordinate facility needs/repairs with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide proper safeguards for the eminence and protection of assigned equipment.
  • Recommend policy, method, or procedural changes to the Athletic Director.
  • Monitor the grades and conduct of athletes.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant by presence at all practices, games, while traveling, and when returning from off-campus events.
  • Complete paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries on proper forms and submit to the Athletic Director by the next school day.
  • Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline, delineate procedures concerning due process when the enforcement of discipline is necessary, and contact parents when a student is suspended, dropped, or becomes ineligible.
  • Participate in the budgeting process with the Athletic Director by submitting needs for the next season.
  • Recommend/select equipment and uniforms within budget appropriations.
  • Be accountable for all equipment in the program and submit notification to the Athletic Director for any equipment lost, damaged, not returned, or returned after the due date.
  • Arrange for issuing, storing, reconditioning of equipment, and submit annual inventory.
  • Properly mark and identify all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Secure all doors, lights, windows, and locks and store all equipment before leaving building or area. Supervise locker room area before and after practice.
  • Instill in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care, and proper use.
  • Maintain good public relations with news media, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Report scores and information after every home contest to the Sacramento Bee. Statistics required by local media, league representatives, and Max Preps will also be the responsibility of the head coach. These duties may be delegated.
  • Ensure that all drivers meet district requirements to transport student-athletes and must be at least 21 years of age prior to driving. Verification will need to be obtained with the site secretary. Athletes are not allowed to drive themselves, ride with other athletes, or with drivers not cleared by the district.
  • Guarantee that all district equipment, including district vehicles, is used for official school business only and is operated safely.
  • Perform other duties which may be assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.
  • Ensure that any volunteer coaches (unpaid coaches or adult help) have been cleared by the district. If a coach allows a non-paid coach/volunteer to work with athletes, that coach is violating district and school policies.
  • Ensure that the binder containing insurance and power of attorneys for each athlete is carried.
  • Ensure that each player signs the Athletic Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure all athletic purchases are cleared with the Athletic Director prior to purchasing.
