About The Position

The Valve Technician is responsible for maintaining and inspecting all functions of water system valves and blowoffs, including those in meter vaults. This role ensures every valve in the ACSA system is accessible, functioning correctly, and properly installed. The technician must be knowledgeable of ACSA specifications for water valve installation to approve warranty work by contractors. Responsibilities include calling in Miss Utility tickets for necessary repairs and work on water valves. The Valve Technician is also responsible for direct reports, training and educating helpers on equipment, parts, and system operations, and planning work for utility workers in their absence. Pre-planning for projects, ensuring equipment, parts, and tools are ready the day before, is crucial. Knowledge of computers, the GIS system, and pipe locating equipment is required. The candidate must be available for emergency incident response on nights, holidays, and weekends, and be able to lead crews on major projects or jobs when the Crew Leader is absent. This includes scheduling and planning daily activities for efficient use of personnel and equipment, overseeing warranty work, and signing off on contractor valve projects. The role involves using Cityworks (and GIS) for work-order generation, inspection documentation, and valve location.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 1 to 3 year's related experience
  • Possession of a valid driver's permit issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia
  • Class A combination vehicle and Tanker endorsements
  • Confined Space Entrant certification
  • Confined Space Rescue Team certification
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification
  • NIMMS Training
  • 16 Hour Asbestos Operations and Maintenance certification
  • VDOT flagging certification
  • Intermediate Work Zone Safety certification
  • Forklift Training
  • 16 Hour OSHA Training
  • Self-Contained Breath Apparatus (SCBA) clearance
  • Basic and Advanced Leadership course
  • Must be able to pass drug/alcohol testing
  • Must be able to work in extreme heat and cold
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 lbs.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure accessibility, proper functioning, and correct installation of all valves in the ACSA system.
  • Sign off on warranty work by contractors for any projects based on ACSA specifications.
  • Call in Miss Utility tickets for all repairs and work needed on water valves.
  • Be responsible for direct reports and train/educate helpers on equipment, parts, system, and other tasks.
  • Plan work for the Utility Worker to perform in the event of absence.
  • Pre-plan for projects, ensuring equipment, parts, and tools are ready the day before.
  • Utilize computers, the GIS system, and pipe locating equipment.
  • Respond to emergency incidents upon request on nights, holidays, and weekends.
  • Efficiently and effectively run crews on major projects or jobs when the Crew Leader is absent.
