About The Position

Union Tank Car Company (UTLX) is seeking applicants to become a member of our production team at our full-service rail tank car repair shop in Cleveland, Texas. The Valve Specialist is responsible for the construction, repair, testing, and support of tank car valves and fittings. This role is ideal for individuals with mechanical aptitude who are eager to learn a skilled trade through hands‑on, on‑the‑job training in a unionized manufacturing environment. Duties may vary, and employees may be asked to perform additional job functions as needed.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent, or ability to pass a Combined Basic Skills Assessment Test
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions with minimal supervision
  • Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals, and assembly documents
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with attention to detail.
  • Ability to work any shift, including overtime, as permitted by the union contract
  • Dependable attendance and reliability

  • Experience in an Industrial Repair or Manufacturing environment.

Responsibilities

  • Disassemble and assemble fittings on tank cars
  • Test tank car, fittings, and valves to detect defects
  • Rebuild tank car fittings and valves using specified procedures
  • Identify and repair leaks in tank car coils
  • Conduct single-car brake test when required
  • Fit mechanical parts and subassemblies into machinery or products
  • Maintain a clean, organized work area and report potential safety hazards
