About The Position

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system, UChicago Medicine, as an Utility Worker at our Hyde Park Location in the Environmental Services department. This position is a 100% onsite opportunity. You will need to be based in the greater Chicagoland area. The Utility Worker will inspect and maintain the Medical Center's fire extinguishers control systems and support the Medical Center's hazard surveillance programs.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required
  • Ability to maintain required documentation
  • Ability to maintain computerized data records related to fire extinguisher inspections, moisture surveillance, and hazard surveillance rounds
  • Ability to work independently and complete assigned duties regularly
  • Must pass the certification examination test offered by the City of Chicago to obtain the license for fire extinguisher inspections

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of NFPA 10 preferred but not required

Responsibilities

  • Inspect all portable fire extinguishers monthly to ensure the charge gauge indicates full, the extinguisher is clean, free from obstructions, and complies with requirements listed in NFPA 10 Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers and the City of Chicago code. The weight of each extinguisher shall be measured to ensure it remains full. Monthly inspections must be recorded both on the extinguisher tag and the computer system provided by the Safety Office.
  • Annual inspections of all extinguishers shall include attaching a new inspection tag, weight testing with a portable scale and cleaning.
  • Coordinate hydrostatic testing for each extinguisher by reviewing the test date on the extinguisher, identifying extinguishers requiring hydrostatic testing, transporting extinguishers to the dock, coordinating testing with the outside contractor, and returning extinguishers to their original location after hydrostatic testing.
  • Assure that fire hoses are in operable condition. Assist as directed in assuring that hoses are maintained and replaced as needed.
  • During extinguisher inspection rounds, general safety issues identified on the checklist shall be identified and recorded.
  • Certify air flow for laboratory chemical fume hoods on an annual basis. Certify that the pressure differential between the laboratories and public spaces is maintained.
  • Perform hazard surveillance rounds and document findings as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as requested by senior management.
