The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled manual field work including construction, maintenance, and repair of storm drainage systems and/or water distribution systems and to operate related equipment, in compliance with Local/State/Federal standards, guidelines and laws. Employees must provide courteous, professional customer service, and are required to provide prompt 24-hour response to various emergency and non-emergency situations. Employees are expected to work in all types of weather conditions, and where hazardous conditions may exist. This role involves performing manual work associated with the construction, maintenance, and repair of water distribution and storm drainage systems, ensuring system integrity, reliability, water quality, and sufficient pressure, while also minimizing flooding and enhancing stormwater runoff quality. Tasks are performed in compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations, utilizing appropriate materials, tools, equipment, and safety practices. Duties may include installation, maintenance, repair, and relocation of fire hydrants, water valves, water mains, and services; performing taps on existing water mains; repairing damaged water mains and services; repairing, adjusting, and relocating water services; installing and maintaining water meters, meter boxes, distribution sample stations, and auto flushers; restoring disturbed areas like swales, lawns, sidewalks, and roads; implementing traffic control measures; performing water distribution system flushing, sampling, and residual testing; and installing, inspecting, maintaining, and repairing storm structures, manholes, pipes, culverts, outfalls, check valves, swales, ditches, ponds, retention areas, and detention areas. The position also involves inspecting, monitoring, and documenting stormwater systems for compliance, completing work order documentation using iPads and computers, and cross-training between water distribution and stormwater systems with the opportunity for dual licensing/certification. Employees may be required to assist other Utility divisions and Town departments.
