About The Position

The Utility Worker IV is a lead position responsible for leading and performing skilled and semi-skilled work related to the installation, maintenance, repair, and operation of wastewater collection systems, including sewer lines, lift stations, and associated equipment. This position provides day-to-day leadership to utility crews, ensures work is performed safely and efficiently, and assists with planning, coordination, and troubleshooting of projects and maintenance activities. The Utility Worker IV serves as a technical resource and may act as a lead worker in the absence of supervisory staff.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED plus one (1) to two (2) years of related wastewater, utility, or construction experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Texas Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B with a good driving record.
  • Traffic Control I (Flagging) certification.
  • Utility Safety, Trenching, and Shoring Safety training.
  • Position may require completion of TEEX training (40–60 hours) as required by the State of Texas.
  • Position may require moderate to heavy lifting and carrying; kneeling, crouching and bending; pushing, pulling and reaching; and standing for prolonged periods of time.

Responsibilities

  • Leads, oversees, and assists utility crews in the installation, repair, replacement, and maintenance of wastewater collection systems, including sewer mains, service laterals, lift stations, and related equipment.
  • Performs and assists with manual labor tasks such as trenching, backfilling, concrete work, pipe installation, valve operation, and equipment operation.
  • Provides leadership in planning daily work activities, assigning tasks, and coordinating manpower, materials, tools, and equipment to complete projects efficiently.
  • Assesses work conditions and makes sound decisions regarding job safety, sequencing of work, and appropriate methods to complete assigned projects.
  • Ensures proper traffic control, trench safety, confined space entry procedures, and all safety regulations are followed in accordance with City, State, and OSHA requirements.
  • Inspects completed work to ensure compliance with specifications, safety standards, and quality expectations.
  • Assists with troubleshooting system issues such as blockages, overflows, equipment malfunctions, and emergency repairs.
  • Responds to customer service requests and assists with compliance issues related to wastewater services.
  • Participates in emergency response activities, including sewer overflows and system failures, and may be subject to after-hours call-out, standby, and on-call duty.
  • Operates and maintains tools, vehicles, and equipment used in wastewater operations.
  • Completes required documentation, work orders, and reports related to maintenance activities.
  • Work the assigned schedule and comply with City timekeeping and attendance policy.
  • Must have and maintain, without interruption, all necessary licenses, certifications, clearances, and/or job requirements.
  • Follow all city safety guidelines.
  • Other duties as assigned.
