About The Position

The Department of Beaches and Harbors is hiring Utility Tractor Operators to support recovery and rebuilding following windstorms and wildfires in Los Angeles County. Under the emergency order, qualified applicants may initially be hired for up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment. During the initial work period, performance is assessed; those who pass may be considered for permanent appointment.

The role operates and maintains wheel-type tractors and related equipment for beach sanitation and other land and grounds work. Duties include using tractor attachments to prepare and grade ground, clear land, move debris, dig, mow, control weeds, relocate portable lifeguard towers, and transport equipment to work sites. The operator also performs routine maintenance and minor repairs and adjustments.

Requirements

• One year of full-time experience operating and maintaining wheel-type tractors and hydraulically actuated and tractor-powered attachments.
• A valid California Class A Driver License is required to perform the job's essential functions.

Responsibilities

• Operate a wheel-type tractor with attachments to plow, disc, harrow, drag, scrape, and pack ground for lawns, plants, shrubs, trees, irrigation, and recreational purposes.
• Operate hydraulically actuated and tractor-powered attachments, including loading buckets, backhoes, rotovators, hammer-knives, rotary mowers, and augers, to clear land, load debris and trash, grade, dig holes and trenches, and potentially demolish small structures.
• Operate chemical sprayers or flaming attachments for weed abatement.
• Operate wheeled or small tracked self-propelled equipment other than tractors on certain assignments.
• Drive a tractor on public highways to and from work areas.
• Drive a truck and trailer combination to haul tractors and other equipment to and from work sites.
• Perform routine maintenance on tractors and attachments and make minor repairs and adjustments as necessary.
• Operate a wheel-type tractor with attachments to rake and sanitize beaches and relocate portable lifeguard towers.
