About The Position

This is a technical position within Hanover County's Career Development Program (CD). The incumbent performs routine repairs on Utility equipment in one of four areas: electrical/mechanical, utility construction, sewer collection operations, or distribution operations. The Utility Technician Ladder has four levels, and incumbents report to a Utility Supervisor or Superintendent. While they do not supervise staff, Senior Utility Technicians and Utility Technicians III may lead lower-level technicians.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Must be able to understand and to follow oral and written instructions.
Valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License at hire.
Class A Commercial Driver's License within 24 months of employment for all technicians EXCEPT for DISTRIBUTION technicians.
Must wear uniform, including safety equipment.

Nice To Haves

Related experience preferred.
Familiarity with the equipment and techniques necessary to perform assigned work tasks.

Responsibilities

Operates and organizes the use of utility tools, equipment, and vehicles.
Assures all safety regulations are met (e.g. VDOT standards for traffic control and flags traffic during VDOT right of way repairs).
Troubleshoots and helps manage emergency situations.
Maintains maintenance records and efficiently completes work orders.
Conducts preventive maintenance and repairs (Electrical/Mechanical).
Maintains, installs and repairs utility electrical/mechanical equipment as needed (Electrical/Mechanical).
Repairs and installs water and sewer lines as needed (Construction).
Operates construction equipment as required (Construction).
Cleans wastewater lines/lift stations, filming lines and laterals as necessary (Collections).
Operates lift stations (Collections).
Maintains and flushes waterlines (Distribution).
Helps operate well systems, collects and analyzes water samples (Distribution).
Calibrates residential meters and performs residential pressure tests as needed (Distribution).
