About The Position

The Utility Plant Operator 1 helps operate and maintain the central boiler plant and related utility systems that support heating, hot water, and other hospital functions at Wernersville State Hospital. The role involves monitoring equipment, performing maintenance, and supporting safe and reliable plant operations while developing skills in the operation of high-pressure steam boilers and related utility services.

The position is full-time and follows a rotating schedule covering all three shifts: 7:00 AM–3:00 PM, 3:00 PM–11:00 PM, and 11:00 PM–7:00 AM, including weekends and holidays. Overtime may be required as needed. The position is not eligible for telework.

Requirements

• Six months of experience as a Utility Plant Helper (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
• Six months of unskilled work experience assisting in the operation, maintenance, or repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional utility plant systems and related equipment, electronic equipment, electrical systems, heavy machinery, motors, engines, drives, or hydraulic systems; or
• An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Must meet the Pennsylvania residency requirement.
• Must be able to perform the essential job functions.
• A conditional offer requires a medical examination.
• A conditional offer requires submission and approval of satisfactory criminal history reports, including PA State Police and FBI clearance.

Responsibilities

• Monitor and operate high-pressure steam boilers, adjusting controls to support changing steam needs.
• Inspect plant areas and auxiliary systems and identify abnormal operating conditions.
• Perform cleaning, chemical treatment, and routine maintenance to support plant performance.
• Support operation of fuel systems used to supply boilers and track fuel usage throughout the shift.
• Log plant data and calculate boiler operation details at the end of each shift.
• Assist with snow removal and respond to emergency call-ins when required.
