About The Position

The City of Springfield is seeking applicants for the Utility Operator I position within the Office of Public Utilities, Division of Supervisor - Material Handling. This role is based at CWLP DALLMAN in Springfield, Illinois. The position requires shift work and offers a starting rate of $30.4261/hour. It is open to all applicants and is part of the IAMAW F&O union. The final date to apply is August 5, 2026.

Requirements

  • Knowledge, skills, and mental development equivalent to completion of four years of high school.
  • Successfully complete 8,000 hours of on-the-job training and related written instruction within four years of the Apprenticeship Program.
  • Obtain and maintain HAZMAT certification.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR certifications.
  • Meet all current requirements of the Labor Agreement between District 9, International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW) and the City of Springfield.
  • Hold a valid Class D Illinois driver’s license.
  • Acquire and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License within the six-month probationary period.
  • This position requires shift work.

  • Current City employees must have completed their probationary period and attained certified status in their current position to be eligible to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Relieve FGDS WWTP Operators and Material Handling Operators as required at Dallman Generating Station or other areas as required.
  • Keep operational log and performs hourly readings as directed.
  • Assist in keeping assigned work areas clean and safe.
  • Work with Buildings and Grounds and Maintenance crews as plant needs require.
  • Report all unfavorable conditions in writing to the Supervisor of Generation and or designated Supervisor.
