Utility Locator (Shaumberg, IL)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator for its Schaumburg, Illinois location. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and works nationwide on utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. This is a full-time employee role for an independent, self-motivated professional who values accurate, safe work and can manage an assigned territory without close supervision. The position involves working in all weather conditions, maintaining company equipment and vehicles, and communicating effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members. Participation in an on-call rotation, overtime, flexible schedules, and travel are expected. Pay is $20.00–$30.00 per hour, and employees are paid door to door.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locating practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively.
Nice To Haves
- Experience with utility maps, as-built drawings, GIS data, electronic locating equipment, and multiple locating methods.
Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately with paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Work independently in the assigned area and travel as needed.
