Utility Locator (Wausau, WI)
About The Position
Northern Lights Locating & Inspection, Inc. is hiring an experienced Utility Locator in Wausau, Wisconsin. The company has protected underground utility infrastructure since 2001 and works nationwide on utility locating, inspection, and sewer imaging projects. This is a full-time employee position for a self-motivated professional who can work independently and manage an assigned territory. The role involves locating underground utilities in accordance with 811 dig laws, accurately marking them, documenting work, and investigating excavation-related damages. Candidates must be willing to work in all weather conditions, participate in an on-call rotation, and work overtime and flexible schedules. The job offers hourly pay of $18.00–$30.00 and says employees are paid from door to door.
Requirements
- At least 2 years of utility locating experience is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of 811 laws and best locate practices.
- Valid driver's license.
- Ability to pass a drug screen.
- Willingness to work in all weather conditions.
- Willingness to work overtime and flexible schedules.
- Consistent attendance and punctuality.
- Ability to work independently without supervision.
- Willingness to travel.

Responsibilities
- Locate underground utilities in compliance with 811 dig laws.
- Read and interpret utility maps, as-built drawings, and GIS data.
- Use electronic locating equipment and multiple locating methods.
- Mark utilities accurately using paint and flags.
- Document work in a mobile app, including photos and reports.
- Investigate and document excavation-related utility damages.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Maintain company equipment and vehicles.
- Communicate effectively with excavators, property owners, and team members.
- Maintain a tobacco-free company vehicle.
