About The Position

This is an Internal Job Posting. ONLY CURRENT CITY OF HAMILTON EMPLOYEES WHO ARE IUOE, LOCAL 20 MEMBERS ARE ELIGIBLE TO APPLY. ALL OTHER APPLICANTS WILL BE REJECTED. This is semi-skilled work of mechanical nature requiring considerable knowledge of the municipal water and gas delivery systems. Employees in this class are responsible for the prompt and efficient response to gas and water service calls to ensure continued service to utility customers, specific work assignments are received from gas and water division supervisors. Administrative responsibility for direction and control is exercised by the Gas Distribution Superintendent. Normal duty assignments will permit considerable opportunity for the application of acquired skills through the use of independent judgment. Work is reviewed daily through written reports and inspections.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials, tools and practices applicable to the installation, removal and adjustment of gas and water meters and services.
  • Knowledge of codes, rules and regulations of the Utilities Department.
  • Some knowledge of the mechanical design, parts and operation of water and gas meters, regulators, and service components, and of the tools used for their testing and repair.
  • Some knowledge of the principles of plumbing and hydraulics as related to the work.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints of water and gas delivery systems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain favorable working relationships with the general public; and deal with complaints courteously and explain meter requirements and departmental policies to the public.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in the use of common tools in making plumbing and mechanical repairs and installations.
  • Considerable experience and/or training in gas or water distribution systems and field mechanical work related to gas and water metering and related services and completion of a standard high school or vocational school course.
  • Must be able to respond from employee residence or domicile within driveway to the City Garage within fifteen (15) minutes when on call.

Responsibilities

  • Investigates customer complaints of abnormal gas pressures; determines cause and takes corrective measures when possible; and reports more serious problems to supervisors for corrective action.
  • Checks and lights customer pilots.
  • Executes and records orders for turn on or off of services during work shift.
  • Adjusts regulators and operators bypass valves.
  • Adjusts, replaces and performs service maintenance on gas and water pressure regulators.
  • Performs minor repairs on gas and water meters in service; and obtains and records special readings.
  • Responds to reports of main ruptures, damaged fire hydrants, water and gas leaks on public or private property; effects repair as possible based upon severity of leak, or notifies supervisor who will determine requirements for service crews.
  • Maintains necessary materials on service truck.
  • Prepares time and materials record on job.
  • Performs related work as required.
