This is entry-level work performing manual labor and assisting semi-skilled workers in the repair and maintenance of wastewater distribution and collections systems. An employee in this class normally works as part of a crew performing various repairs and maintenance tasks. The complexity of work involves cutting and installing sewer pipes that are damaged or broken; safely operating motor vehicles and equipment; and testing, repairing, and maintaining components of the wastewater distribution and collections system. Instruction and training is provided by the supervisor or appropriate staff. Personal contacts include working with other County employees and responding to public inquiries on the nature and purpose of the work being performed. The work is physical requiring the lifting of heavy pipes, operating equipment, and working in trenches. The work is hazardous by having to work in confined spaces and being exposed to contagious diseases. An employee works in all types of weather conditions and must be able to respond to work emergencies outside of the scheduled work hours. Work performance is reviewed and evaluated by a supervisor.
