About The Position

The Utilities Maintenance Technician I is responsible for installing, testing, inspecting, locating, troubleshooting, evaluating, monitoring, maintaining, and repairing all components and assets of the County’s water distribution and wastewater collection system. This role involves preparing and maintaining accurate work records, assisting with construction and installation projects, and performing general building and grounds maintenance. The technician will operate heavy equipment, work outside regular hours including on-call duties, and respond to work order requests, all while adhering to safety policies and procedures. The position also requires data involvement (collecting, analyzing, entering data), people involvement (communicating with others), and involvement with complex machinery and systems. Reasoning requirements include constant problem-solving and the ability to perceive off-normal conditions. Mathematical requirements involve basic mathematics, geometry, and algebra, and language requirements include reading technical materials and composing reports. Mental requirements involve performing technical tasks with independent judgment. This is a safety-sensitive position with potential exposure to various environmental hazards and requires heavy physical exertion.

Requirements

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
  • One year of relevant experience.
  • Valid state driver’s license.
  • Ability to use basic mathematics, geometry, and algebra involving variables and formulas, plane and solid figures, circumferences, areas, and volumes.
  • Ability to use a calculator to determine changes in pump run times, tank changes, etc.
  • Ability to read technical instructions, procedures, manuals, and charts to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to compose routine reports and specialized reports, forms, and business letters with proper format.
  • Ability to speak compound sentences using normal grammar and word form.
  • Ability to perform clerical, manual, or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and independent judgment with obvious choices.
  • Normal attention for accurate results.
  • Ability to speak and/or signal to people to convey or exchange information of a general nature.
  • Ability to communicate clearly to customers, both internal and external.
  • Ability to operate and/or repair complex machinery or equipment that requires extended training and experience, such as public utility equipment and systems, heavy equipment, and vehicles; may involve installation and testing.
  • Ability to analyze and use logic to justify decision-making process.
  • Ability to perceive off-normal conditions.
  • Heavy work involving walking, standing, climbing, balancing, stooping, crouching, shoveling, crawling, reaching, and constantly lifting, pushing, or raising objects, exerting between 35 to 50 pounds of force on a recurring basis and 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.
  • Normal visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception, texture perception, and odor perception.
  • Ability to work in a stable environment with clear and uncomplicated written/oral instructions but with some variations from the routine.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized vocational training or technical diploma is desirable.
  • Possession of South Carolina Commercial Driver’s license is preferred.
  • Must obtain “B” Commercial Driver’s License within 18 months.
  • Must obtain Class “D” Water Distribution and/or “D” Wastewater Collections within 12 months of hire.
  • May require to pursue higher certifications/licenses.

Responsibilities

  • Install, test, inspect, locate, troubleshoot, evaluate, monitor, maintain, and repair all components and assets of the County’s water distribution and wastewater collection system.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate work records.
  • Assist with construction and installation projects as assigned.
  • Perform general building and grounds maintenance and repair work as required.
  • Maintain neat and safe shop areas.
  • Operate heavy equipment including loaders, mowers, trucks, and cranes.
  • Work outside of regular work schedule to include on-call, holidays, nights, and weekends when needed.
  • Respond and follow through with work order requests.
  • Perform all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.
  • Attend meetings, training, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills.
  • Considered an essential employee in the event of inclement weather or emergency conditions.
  • All other duties as assigned.
