About The Position

Utilities & Energy Services in the Division of Operations includes over 240 staff members with varied backgrounds and interests. Our goal is to be a world class leader in the production, delivery, and management of utilities and energy services, fostering a culture of excellence while effectively stewarding university resources and the environment. Utilities Line Technicians at all levels install, maintain, test, and repair overhead and underground high‑voltage electrical distribution systems, including cables, transformers, switchgear, and related equipment, while working at heights and in confined spaces. Depending on experience level, duties range from assisting and training in core tasks to independently performing complex work, overseeing projects, and leading crews in planning, scheduling, and safe execution of operations. All roles require collaboration, adherence to safety standards, and progressive technical skill development in the line technician trade.

Requirements

  • High school or equivalent.
  • Master Utilities Line Technician: 7 years of experience in overhead and underground electrical distribution system maintenance and operation.
  • Senior Utilities Line Technician: 5 years of experience in overhead and underground electrical distribution system maintenance and operation.
  • Utilities Line Technician: 3 years of experience in overhead and underground electrical distribution system maintenance and operation.
  • Utilities Line Technician Assistant: 1 year of related experience in general electrical, or electronics.
  • Responsible for installing and servicing high voltage distribution systems.
  • Valid Class B drivers license or ability to obtain within 6 months.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, test, and repair overhead and underground high‑voltage electrical distribution systems, including cables, transformers, switchgear, and related equipment.
  • Work at heights and in confined spaces.
  • Assist and train in core tasks (depending on experience level).
  • Independently perform complex work (depending on experience level).
  • Oversee projects (depending on experience level).
  • Lead crews in planning, scheduling, and safe execution of operations (depending on experience level).
  • Collaborate with others.
  • Adhere to safety standards.
  • Develop technical skills in the line technician trade.
