About The Position

As a US Tax Analyst at Cortland, you will serve as a key contributor to the firm’s tax function, supporting the compliance, reporting, and operational needs of a growing real estate investment platform. In this role, you will move beyond foundational tasks to take on greater ownership of tax processes, working with more complex data sets and contributing to the accuracy and integrity of tax reporting across Cortland’s multi-entity structure. You will partner closely with the VP of Tax Compliance and Reporting to execute federal, state, and local tax requirements, while gaining meaningful exposure to partnership taxation, real estate investments, and fund structures. This role offers the opportunity to deepen your technical knowledge while leveraging your analytical skills to identify trends, resolve issues, and enhance existing processes. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.
  • 1–3 years of experience in tax, accounting, or finance (public accounting or corporate environment preferred)
  • Strong understanding of US tax principles and accounting concepts, particularly as applied in a corporate or real estate environment.
  • Ability to analyze financial data with accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel skills; ability to learn ERP systems and tax software.
  • Clear written and verbal communication with the ability to explain tax concepts effectively.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines efficiently.

Nice To Haves

  • Exposure to real estate taxation, partnerships, or multi-entity structures is highly preferred.
  • Basic understanding or strong desire to learn real estate operations, partnerships, and investment structures is a plus.
  • Progress toward CPA designation preferred

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the preparation of schedules and supporting data for corporate income tax returns, US state and local tax filings, and other tax-related compliance requirements.
  • Prepare journal entries, perform general ledger analysis, and support the reconciliation of tax-related accounts.
  • Identify discrepancies or inconsistencies in tax data or processes and escalate issues beyond defined procedures to senior team members or management.
  • Support internal and external tax audits by gathering required documentation and responding to information requests.
  • Collect and organize financial data for tax reporting and analysis.
  • Review system-generated reports to ensure basic tax accuracy.
  • Support the development and maintenance of tax models used for forecasting and management analysis.
  • Follow established professional standards, procedures, and internal controls related to tax operations.
  • Maintain accurate and well-organized records for all tax-related transactions and documentation.
  • Assist in developing tax reference materials and training resources to help business partners understand relevant tax concepts.
  • Collaborate with tax team members and cross-functional partners such as Accounting and Finance to achieve shared goals.
  • Participate in cross-functional projects and work groups, contributing to process improvements and supporting prioritization of team deliverables.
  • Build and maintain strong working relationships with colleagues across the organization by participating in meetings, contributing to discussions, and supporting problem-solving efforts while helping resolve routine challenges in a professional and collaborative manner.
