Upward Bound-TRiO Algebra Teacher
About The Position
The Upward Bound Program Instructor - Trio Algebra Staff will teach Algebra classes to high school participants as part of the Upward Bound summer program. This role involves revising or creating subject-specific curriculum aligned with the program's theme, selecting materials, and developing lesson and assessment plans. The instructor will deliver courses designed to foster excitement for learning and develop concrete academic skills, helping participants get a head start on their Fall coursework. Responsibilities include monitoring and reporting student performance weekly, maintaining student records confidentially, and completing student evaluations. The position also requires attending staff orientations, weekly meetings, and post-summer meetings.
Requirements
- Current Portsmouth Public Schools teacher or Virginia certified teacher with Bachelor's degree in an academic course that individual will be tutoring
- Proven knowledge of academic course that individual will be teaching
- Knowledge of and/or experience working with high school students

- Preference given to individuals who have succeeded in overcoming economic, social and academic barriers similar to the students
Responsibilities
- Teach classes to high school participants as part of Upward Bound summer program

- Select materials for themed designed courses based on UB staff recommendations
- Develop and submit lesson and assessment plans
- Deliver courses geared towards generating excitement for learning, as well as developing concrete academic skills in UB participants
- Provide course content in a manner that helps UB participants to have a head start on their Fall 2023 course work
- Monitor, record and report students' performance on a weekly basis
- Provide appropriate classroom management for 9th-11th graders
- Maintain student records in a secure and confidential manner
- Complete formative and summative evaluations for each student in class(es)
- Attend UB staff orientations, weekly meetings and post-summer meeting(s)
- Other duties as assigned
