About The Position

The UNM-Valencia Campus Upward Bound Program is seeking a Teacher, Pre-College Programs for its summer program. This grant-funded, on-call position, with funding available through 08/31/2026, will manage day-to-day aspects of the Upward Bound Program. Responsibilities include tutoring, leading workshops, teaching, and delivering college preparation and academic lessons to high school students at specific locations: Los Lunas High School (Mathematics), Belen High School (Language Arts), and Valencia High School (Mathematics and Language Arts). The role involves supporting and instructing students during the summer, providing assistance in language arts or other pre-college disciplines at local high schools and UNM-Valencia Campus. The position requires employing various pedagogical practices to improve student academic progress and equip them with skills for higher education transition. It also involves supporting and engaging students in college preparatory topics, and documenting student progress, attendance, and other tracking tasks. The University of New Mexico-Valencia Campus, located south of Albuquerque, is a two-year branch campus functioning as a community college and is a Hispanic Serving Institution. It offers academic transfer programs, vocational programs, Adult Basic Education, and Dual Credit courses. The faculty and staff serve approximately 2,000 students per semester. UNM has received a platinum-level distinction from FamilyFriendlyNM.org for its workplace policies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree.
  • At least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.
  • Valid driver's license or transportation to site locations.
  • Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Two or more years directly related experience.
  • Experience working with at-risk first-gen students.
  • Experience in curriculum planning and implementation of a program.
  • Ability to tutor in Algebra and Geometry.

Responsibilities

  • Tutoring and instructing during the summer.
  • Providing support in language arts or other pre-college disciplines at area high schools and at UNM-Valencia Campus.
  • Practicing various pedagogical practices to enhance student academic progress.
  • Gaining the skills necessary to transition from high school to higher education.
  • Supporting and engaging students in college preparatory topics.
  • Documenting student progress, attendance, and other student tracking tasks.
  • Overseeing certain day-to-day aspects of the Upward Bound Program including but not limited to tutoring, leading workshops, teaching, and executing college preparation/academic lessons for high school students.
