About The Position

Norfolk Collegiate School is seeking a dedicated and engaging Upper School Social Studies Long-Term Substitute Teacher to join our faculty beginning in February 2027 and continuing through the end of the 2026-2027 school year. The long-term substitute teacher will assume the full instructional responsibilities of an Upper School Social Studies teacher, providing consistent, high-quality instruction and maintaining continuity for students throughout the remainder of the academic year. The successful candidate will create a supportive and intellectually engaging classroom environment that encourages students to think critically, communicate effectively and engage thoughtfully with historical and contemporary issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required
  • Previous teaching experience at the secondary level strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to engage and support students with a range of learning styles and abilities.
  • Strong classroom management, organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues, students and families.

Nice To Haves

  • degree in history, social studies, education or a related field preferred.
  • Experience in an independent school environment is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Teach assigned Upper School Social Studies courses in accordance with established curriculum and department expectations, including AP US History and AP World History.
  • Implement engaging lesson plans that promote critical thinking, inquiry, discussion and effective written and oral communication.
  • Manage assessments, grading, and communication with students and families during the assignment period.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance, assignments and academic progress.
  • Maintain a positive, respectful and well-managed classroom environment.
  • Collaborate with members of the Social Studies Department and Upper School faculty to ensure continuity of instruction and student support.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional responsibilities, student supervision and other duties typically associated with an Upper School faculty position.
  • Support the mission, values and community expectations of Norfolk Collegiate School.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head of Upper School or designee.

Benefits

  • Compensation: $280.00 - $320.00 per day, based on relevant education, teaching experience and licensure.
