About The Position

Mount Vernon School seeks an experienced and adaptable Upper School mathematics educator to serve as a Long-Term Math Substitute during the 2026 - 27 school year. This is a full-time, temporary position covering the full teaching load and faculty responsibilities of a math team member on leave. The Long-Term Math Substitute reports to the Head of Upper School and partners closely with the math team to carry forward the curriculum, assessment plan, and student relationships already in motion. Versatility, collaboration, and openness to innovative instructional practices are essential. Availability to sponsor athletic, artistic, or academic teams/clubs is preferred.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics Education, Mathematics, or related field
  • Experience teaching secondary mathematics (preferred)
  • Prior classroom teaching, long-term substitute, or interim teaching experience (preferred)
  • Availability for the full assignment, January 2027 through April 2027
  • Background/real-world experience in content knowledge area (mathematics)
  • Ability to step into an established classroom mid-year and build trust with students quickly
  • Adaptability and self-leadership in a fast-moving, collaborative division
  • Ability to cultivate respectful and affirming environments
  • Culturally proficient & equity literate
  • A track record of giving high-quality, responsive feedback
  • Understanding of competency-based assessment and/or a mastery approach to Learning
  • Proficiency in Google Suite & Mac/Apple OS

Responsibilities

  • Teaching a full Upper School mathematics load as assigned, which may include Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II
  • Knowledge of the content (mathematics) and ability to make interdisciplinary/real-world connections
  • Carrying forward the curriculum, pacing, and assessment plan established by the math team
  • Co-designing curriculum and assessment with the math team
  • Communicating with families, learning coaches, and outside providers
  • Participating in weekly school/division/team meetings
  • Meeting the needs of the division by helping with weekly coverage and duties
  • Care and nurture for the social and emotional needs of each student by customizing/differentiating the learning experience
  • Participation in duties (e.g., grade-level advisor, lunch, enrichment, and carpool) and others as assigned
  • Completing grades, narrative feedback, and progress documentation for the terms covered
