About The Position

The Pennington School is seeking a Teacher of Upper School History for the 2026-27 academic year. The ideal candidate for this position is a highly engaging and passionate educator who will teach four sections of Upper School History and will collaborate with colleagues to introduce and build student understanding by using course content to develop mastery of historical thinking and writing skills. The candidate will also embrace a student-centered approach to learning and guide students to work toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding.

Requirements

  • An advanced degree in history or a related discipline, with at least three years of high school teaching experience preferred
  • Ability to teach AP-level history courses
  • Independent school experience preferred
  • Interest and/or experience in teaching non-Western history electives
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Willingness and desire to work in a collaborative environment
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Familiarity with Schoology or another LMS is a plus
  • Ability to work with a variety of learning styles
  • Willingness and desire to be an active member of a community that embraces diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • A positive attitude, a growth mindset, and a sense of humor
  • Must pass the State of New Jersey criminal background check

Responsibilities

  • Teach Upper School students World History and possibly Advanced Placement courses
  • Enthusiastically collaborate in interdisciplinary humanities work with the Upper School English Department, including teaching a Humanities Skills seminar in conjunction with other faculty members
  • Support the History Department's mission to provide each student with the opportunity to develop empathy and connect more broadly to the variety of human experiences
  • Engage students in a wide variety of student-centered learning practices to build competency in academic skills that are both discipline-specific and transferable to other areas of study
  • Embrace and utilize the teaching for understanding framework in curriculum planning
  • Collaborate in assessment development and grading practices
  • Contribute to the growth of the department and the School through committee work and other department-related duties
  • Elicit individual excellence in every student, moving the student toward personal and collective goals in skills, habits of mind, and understanding
  • Demonstrate warmth, collegiality, humor, and industry in interactions with students, colleagues, and parents
  • Other duties as needed
  • Attendance at School events is required, which may include occasional weekends and evenings.
