About The Position

VTG is seeking a Upholsterer/Upholstery Restoration Specialist in Patuxent River, MD to support the Presidential Helicopters Support Program. This role involves repairing and rebuilding upholstered aircraft furnishings using hand tools and knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods. Responsibilities include removing old coverings, webbing, and padding, replacing or retrying springs, measuring and cutting new materials, installing coverings, and tacking or sewing ornamental trim. The specialist may also operate a sewing machine for cushions and sections, repair wooden frames, and work on various aircraft items including insulation, soundproofing panels, carpets, and other fabrics.

Requirements

  • High School Education or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three (3) years actual experience performing aforementioned duties/responsibilities.
  • Top Secret Yankee White Security Clearance.
  • Working knowledge of publications, drawings, blueprints, microfilm, diagrams and schematics are mandatory, military applications preferred.
  • Working knowledge of upholstery, sewing processes and products.
  • Must be a U. S. citizen.
  • Individuals released from Military Service with other than “Honorable Discharges” do not meet minimum qualifications.

Nice To Haves

  • Contract Cross utilization of aircraft skilled positions; i.e. mechanics, in support billets; i.e. Tool Room, Warehouse, etc. is preferred allowing for efficiencies and flexibility

Responsibilities

  • Repairs and rebuilds upholstered aircraft furnishings using hand tools and knowledge of fabrics and upholstery methods.
  • Removes coverings, webbing and padding from seats, arms, backs and sides of work piece using a tack puller, chisel, and mallet.
  • Removes defective springs by cutting cords or wires that hold them in place, replaces webbing and springs or reties springs as necessary.
  • Measures and cuts new covering material, installs material on inside of arms, back, seat, and over outside back and arms.
  • Tacks or sews ornamental trim, such as braid and buttons, to cover and frame.
  • Operates sewing machine to seam cushions and join various sections of covering materials.
  • Repairs wooden frame of work piece.
  • Repairs seats from various types of aircraft.
  • Repairs a variety of items requiring special shaping, cushioning and covering including aircraft insulation and soundproofing panels.
  • Repairs special devices and assemblies and other items such as carpets and other fabrics.
