About The Position

Bridgecross LLC is seeking a UNIX System Administrator to support the National Ocean Service (NOS), National Geodetic Survey (NGS). This position will provide UNIX/Linux systems administration support, including server maintenance, capacity planning, system monitoring, user account administration, backup and recovery support, hardware/software inventory management, and troubleshooting to ensure reliable system operations and minimal downtime. The UNIX System Administrator will support the installation, configuration, maintenance, and monitoring of servers, operating systems, applications, file systems, peripherals, and related infrastructure. This role will also assist with implementing standard operating procedures, testing software fixes and patches, supporting technology refresh activities, and ensuring compliance with applicable government policies, procedures, and FISMA-related training requirements.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience providing UNIX/Linux systems administration support in an enterprise IT environment.
  • Experience should include server administration, user account management, system monitoring, patching, backup and recovery support, hardware/software inventory management, troubleshooting, and technical documentation.
  • Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Public Trust clearance.
  • Candidates must be U.S. citizens.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related technical field is preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, technical certifications, and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Experience supporting federal government, scientific, geospatial, or mission-critical IT environments is preferred.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with an active or recently adjudicated Public Trust clearance.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain capacity planning documentation to assess current computing utilization by application, device, and system.
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of standard operating procedures.
  • Audit, test, and evaluate locally developed software fixes, patches, and system runs to improve performance and efficiency.
  • Monitor archiving and retrieval activities for user documents to assess the effectiveness of planned archiving schedules.
  • Install, support, and maintain UNIX/Linux servers and other computer systems.
  • Plan for and respond to service outages, hardware failures, and other operational issues.
  • Perform basic scripting to support system administration tasks and automation.
  • Administer user accounts, including account setup, maintenance, and access support.
  • Monitor system performance, report issues to NGS, and assist with corrective actions.
  • Maintain systems and peripherals to minimize downtime and support reliable operations.
  • Create and manage file systems for different operating system environments and devices.
  • Develop and support backup and recovery procedures.
  • Monitor network communications and assist with identifying system or connectivity issues.
  • Test and update systems when new versions of operating systems or application software are released, as directed by NOS.
  • Implement policies governing the use of computer systems and networks.
  • Diagnose technical problems, provide user assistance, and document resolutions.
  • Maintain computer hardware and software inventories, including hardware/software configurations and locations.
  • Use NGS standard file structures and methods when producing digital and paper reports.
  • Coordinate hardware repair when failures occur.
  • Replace system components such as disk drives, memory chips, and other hardware components, as directed by NOS Government personnel.
  • Configure new systems, install or update software, and assist with hardware surplus activities.
  • Track inventoried property in the ticketing system and provide Government email notification regarding movement of inventoried assets.
  • Follow Government policies and procedures to send, receive, inspect, test, and deploy technology in support of Government requirements.
  • Follow Government policies and procedures to remove equipment from deployed areas, wipe data storage devices, and prepare equipment for surplus and shipping.
  • Notify custodians when equipment removal and surplus/shipping activities occur.
  • Assist the Government with technology refresh activities.
  • Complete role-based training requirements identified by the associated FISMA system, as well as any relevant component or operating system certifications.
