About The Position

Under general supervision, functions as a supervisor of a shift and/or complex specialized unit. Responsibilities include inspecting police officers and security guards, performing supervisory duties such as assigning patrol responsibilities, establishing priorities, and evaluating work performance. The role involves instructing, directing, and guiding personnel on a patrol shift. Conducts investigations and prepares detailed computer-generated and verbal reports on various incidents including criminal offenses, traffic accidents, personal injuries, and missing persons. Observes the activities and capabilities of supervised personnel to ensure prompt and efficient performance of police duties. Reports misconduct, incompetence, neglect of duty, or rule violations in writing to a superior officer. Patrols campus to deter and detect criminal activity and identify hazards. Confers with the incoming supervisor at the end of a tour of duty. Enforces all University rules, regulations, and State laws. Evaluates subordinates, encourages maximum efficiency, relays orders, and passes information up the chain-of-command. Accountable for the accuracy, legibility, and thoroughness of subordinate reports. Assigned specialized program assignments, responsible for program development, and training of police, staff, and students on campus safety programs. Conducts required daily roll calls and shift inspections. Performs all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED, A.A. desirable.
  • Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
  • Five years law enforcement experience; three years law enforcement supervisory experience at the rank of Corporal or above.
  • Thorough knowledge of citizens rights and responsibilities; of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
  • Skill in detecting situations imperiling public safety; in operating emergency vehicles under all conditions; in the care and use of firearms, self-defense tools and criminal detection devices; in communicating effectively both orally and in writing; in operating two way radios and telephones in a variety of environments; in conducting confidential investigations; in applying knowledge, experience, and reason to arrive at prompt and effective decisions for both routine and critical situations.
  • Ability to show sensitivity in interactions with a diverse population; to maintain composure and demonstrate professionalism and restraint at all times; to perform extensive sitting, driving, standing, walking, climbing, and running; to lift, drag, and carry heavy objects; to establish and maintain effective working relationships; to follow oral and written directions; to provide guidance and training or supervision to others; to respond to situations requiring physical stamina and force; to enter and exit vehicles frequently and quickly; to work in and wear personal protective equipment.
  • Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job.
  • Employees in this job class are required to maintain certification as specified by the Maryland Police Training Commission.
  • Employees in this job class may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing.
  • Certification as a police officer by the Maryland Police Training Commission.
  • Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.

  • Evaluates subordinates and encourage personnel to achieve maximum levels of efficiency.
  • Relays orders to subordinates and passes information up the chain-of-command to his/her superiors.
  • Accountable for the accuracy, legibility and thoroughness of all reports submitted by their subordinates.
  • Assigned specialized program assignments and ate responsible for program development and the training of police, staff and students about various campus safety programs.
  • Conducts required daily roll calls and inspection of their shift.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
