About The Position

The Unit Secretary is responsible for coordinating and performing a broad range of clerical support functions in the nursing unit. This includes performing reception functions, managing inventory and ordering unit supplies, collecting and compiling patient data, and assembling and organizing medical records. The role also coordinates and assists with patient access, nursing, and case management for the patient admission and discharge process. Key responsibilities involve accurately preparing correspondence, documents, forms, reports, and ad hoc projects, establishing and maintaining effective filing systems, providing excellent departmental telephone and reception coverage, and ensuring patient call lights are answered in a timely manner while maintaining HIPAA compliance. The secretary is expected to actively engage in caring behaviors, demonstrate independent judgment, effectively use computer and office systems for documentation and information coordination, ensure appropriate inventory and equipment functionality, and maintain a clean, organized work area.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate or Equivalent
  • Must demonstrate customer service skills appropriate to the job
  • AHA Basic Life Support
  • Understanding of basic medical terminology
  • Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively in English
  • Computer literacy and proficiency
  • Hospital Fire and Life Safety Card (Los Angeles City Employees only)

Responsibilities

  • Ensuring the work area is clean, clutter free, and organized
