The Unit Secretary- Peds HUC is responsible for coordinating tests and treatments with and between various departments for patients on nursing units. This role requires maintaining a working knowledge of the functions and services offered by all diagnostic and treatment departments to facilitate the scheduling of tests and treatments. The position also facilitates communications required to support patient care, including managing a multi-line telephone, unit/site paging, and the hospital information system. The Unit Secretary screens incoming telephone calls, monitors department office equipment, troubleshoots minor problems, and arranges for repair of major malfunctions. A working knowledge of the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and other computer systems for ordering patient and unit supplies and equipment is necessary. The role involves processing daily patient charges and/or related procedures through the system, compiling necessary chart forms for admissions, transfers, discharges, and expirations, and obtaining appropriate copies of medical records for transfers. Verifying the completeness and accuracy of patient demographic information, patient identification, and registration in the medical record, including the appropriate level of care, is also a key responsibility. The Unit Secretary establishes and maintains positive customer relations, contributes to a harmonious work environment, and quickly and courteously acknowledges requests, responds to call lights, demonstrates proper phone etiquette, and fosters communication between the health care team. This position requires the ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served, including understanding the principles of growth and development over the life span and assessing data reflective of the patient's status to identify age-specific needs.
