The Unit Coordinator provides administrative support to unit-based and hospital-wide clinicians and staff in an inpatient unit, functioning as the liaison between the patient, visitors and the clinicians. This role is expected to effectively organize priorities, complete tasks on time and to manage confidential patient information. The Unit Coordinator is responsible for partnering with nursing to coordinate the day-to-day patient flow, including communication to key players regarding patient admissions, discharges, and transfers. Additionally, the role is expected to provide outstanding services for every customer interaction. Actual job duties may vary by department. The Unit Coordinator performs clerical and other duties to assist in the general administration of the floor or unit. This includes greeting and interacting with patients, families, visitors, and coworkers in person and via communication tools in a professional manner. The role involves receiving, prioritizing, organizing, and managing information at the central nursing station and throughout the unit. Scheduling consultations, tests, procedures, and patient transport to other departments is also a key function. Entering accurate and timely information into the electronic medical record about admissions, discharges, and transfers is crucial for efficient patient flow. The Unit Coordinator contacts ancillary service departments to obtain equipment, services, and supplies; tracks status and location; and uses designated processes for identifying and facilitating repairs. In some departments, the role may assist the manager with payroll duties, staff scheduling, or supervision of unit secretaries. Duties may vary by department, and the Unit Coordinator performs other duties as assigned and complies with all policies and standards.
