About The Position

This role is responsible for processing and maintaining the patient record from admission through discharge, maintaining statistical data, and completing all designated paperwork. The Unit Coordinator also orders office supplies, demonstrates effective organizational skills, monitors the charging system, and transcribes medication orders according to nursing policies. They are responsible for answering the telephone promptly, presenting a positive image to patients and visitors, and maintaining confidentiality of all information. Additionally, this role assists in orienting new staff, meets professional accountability standards, and completes other duties as assigned. The position also emphasizes patient safety by incorporating safety goals, identifying and reporting safety issues, and supporting a culture of safety through education and encouraging patient concerns. Adherence to attendance and punctuality policies is expected, and the role may provide guidance and support to others when directed.

Requirements

  • Must possess verbal and written skills to communicate effectively and courteously with a diverse group of professional and non-professional members of the health care team, patients and family/significant others.
  • High School Diploma or Equivalency
  • Must be vaccinated against influenza (flu) as a condition of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Processes and maintains the patient record, admission through discharge.
  • Maintains statistical data if applicable.
  • Assumes responsibility to complete all paperwork as designated by the charge nurse or Director.
  • Responsible for ordering appropriate amounts of office supplies for use on the floor in conjunction with the Director.
  • Demonstrates effective organizational skills by prioritizing and completing assignments within the shift.
  • Monitors charging system for floor and functions appropriately.
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize by providing prompt and accurate follow through.
  • Transcribes medication orders as nursing policies dictate.
  • Legibly transcribes all pertinent information.
  • Promptly answers the telephone identifying self and the department.
  • Presents department and self in a positive manner to patients, visitors and other employees.
  • Maintains confidentiality of department and patient information at all times.
  • Records and relays messages to appropriate individuals.
  • Assists in orientation of new unit coordinators and staff to the clerical aspects of the unit.
  • Meets professional accountability regarding individual professional growth and development, customer relations, confidentiality, participation in hospital/unit based committees, follows hospital policies, participates in Quality processes both organizational and unit based, and time and attendance.
  • Completes other duties as assigned
  • Incorporates Patient Safety Goals in daily work and identifies and reports safety issues to supervisor, Patient Safety Hotline, and/or through the incident reporting process.
  • Supports a culture of patient safety by educating patients and families on the care they are receiving, encouraging them to voice their concerns and informs them how to report related issues.
  • Adheres to the hospital's policies and procedures regarding absences and tardiness.
  • Provides adequate notice when calling out sick and requesting time off
  • Arrives and departs from work at appropriate time.
  • At times and when directed, may provide guidance and support to others while acting as a resource, trainer and/or preceptor.
