About The Position
The Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center is seeking an exceptional and talented Psychiatrist to serve as the Unit Chief of an 8-bed, Extended Observation Beds (EOB) Unit. The Mount Sinai Health System is seeking a dynamic leader to join our team at the Mount Sinai Behavioral Health Center, a transformational, community-oriented destination for behavioral health with integrated services for mental health, substance abuse, physical health, and social service needs. The Unit Chief of the 8-bed Extended Observation Beds (EOB) Unit provides clinical leadership for a multidisciplinary academic treatment team comprising psychiatrists, psychiatry residents, nursing staff, social workers, and occupational therapists. Serving as a role model for professionalism, clinical excellence, and scholarly practice, the Unit Chief fosters a culture of high-quality patient care, exceptional education, and collaborative teamwork. This opportunity is ideal for a collaborative physician leader seeking to expand clinical, operational, and academic leadership experience within an acute inpatient psychiatric setting. Responsibilities include overall clinical leadership of the unit, direct clinical care, training and supervision. The Unit Chief works in close partnership with the Medical Director of Acute Care and Vice Chair to advance clinical, educational, and operational goals across the service.
Requirements
- Board certified/board eligible Psychiatrist
- Possess a NYS license to practice medicine
- Excellent clinical knowledge, communication, and teaching skills
- Must possess highly collaborative and proactive approach, and demonstrated commitment to high-quality, cost-effective health care
- A strong work ethic and desire to participate in and grow a team-oriented, performance-driven department
- Qualifications for Assistant Professor or higher
Responsibilities
- Leads and oversees the interdisciplinary team and team meetings
- Provides clinical consultation and supervision to the unit in partnership with the Medical Director of Acute Care Psychiatry
- Assists with creating the EOB coverage schedule
- Provides psychiatric care to adult patients with acute psychiatric disorders
- Partners with the Medical Director of Acute Care Psychiatry to ensure continuity of care on the unit
- Leads interdisciplinary treatment planning, collaborating with the multidisciplinary team to promote patient-centered care
- Maintains timely, accurate, and regulatory-compliant documentation of clinical care
- Provides clinical oversight and supervision of psychiatry residents when on rotation fostering excellence in patient care and clinical education
- Participates in educational activities including lectures and case conferences as scheduled by the Department of Psychiatry
- Collaborates with training program leadership in all elements of administrative and clinical responsibilities
- Participates in Quality Improvement (QI) activities, including performance improvement projects and chart reviews to enhance patient outcomes, safety, and operational effectiveness
- Serves as a member of departmental committees focused on quality, patient safety, and patient experience
- Promotes a culture of continuous improvement through education and mentorship of interdisciplinary team members
- Collaborates with the Departmental Quality and Safety leadership, the Vice Chair, and the Chair in the review, investigation, and follow-up of safety events, incidents, and patient care concerns occurring within the inpatient psychiatry unit.
- Monitors and evaluates the use of emergency procedures including restraints, seclusion, manual holds, and emergency intramuscular medications to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, best practices, and patient-centered care standards
- Supports ongoing regulatory compliance and accreditation readiness
