Employees in this job perform a variety of activities in call/contact centers, walk-in locations, work processing locations, and/or administration offices in the provision of the unemployment claims services to claimants, employers, and the general public in accordance with the Michigan Employment Security (MESC) Act, and established methods and procedures.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college (60 semester or 90 term credits).
  • Unemployment Insurance Examiner 8: No specific type or amount is required.
  • Unemployment Insurance Examiner 9: Two years of experience equivalent to an Unemployment Claims Interviewer 8 or one year equivalent to an Unemployment Insurance Examiner 8.
  • Unemployment Insurance Examiner E10: Two years of experience equivalent to an Unemployment Claims Interviewer 9 or one year equivalent to an Unemployment Insurance Examiner 9, Unemployment Claims Examiner 9, or Unemployment Claims Interviewer E10.
  • Unemployment Insurance Examiner 8 Alternate Education and Experience: Four years of office support experience involving public contacts in the Unemployment Insurance Agency, including two years equivalent to the experienced (E7) level may be substituted for the education requirement.
  • Unemployment Insurance Examiner 8 Alternate Education and Experience: Four years of office support experience with substantial public contacts interviewing people to obtain substantive information for decision making in a business or industrial setting, including two years equivalent to the experienced (E7) level may be substituted for the education requirement.
  • Attach a cover letter, detailed resume, and official college transcript(s).
  • Official college transcripts must contain the college/university name and address, the degree conferred, date granted, coursework completed (especially if no degree granted), and the Registrar's signature and/or seal.
  • A scanned or electronic copy of transcripts is acceptable if it contains the required elements.
  • Applicants with a degree from a foreign college or university must have their academic credentials evaluated or converted into U.S. educational equivalents unless the degree has been recognized by the Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).
  • Failure to provide foreign credential evaluation at the time of application may result in being screened out.
  • Information provided in application, resume, cover letter, transcripts, and other documentation will be used to verify responses to supplemental questions.
  • All classified employees are subject to Civil Service Rule 2-8 Ethical Standards and Conduct.
  • All newly hired state employees are required to submit and pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Certain positions may also require state criminal, fingerprint-based and driving record background checks.
  • Any position offer will be conditional until results of background checks and drug test indicate eligibility for employment.
