About The Position

CNA’s Underwriting Trainee Program is designed for individuals interested in developing a career in insurance underwriting. Trainees receive professional skills development, productivity courses, and a curriculum covering insurance basics; underwriting, professional, sales, and marketing skills; technical training within their discipline; and broader industry knowledge. Training combines on-the-job and virtual learning, instructor-led sessions, testing, self-study, web-based courses, and practical application. The program includes exposure to multiple lines of business and industry segments through formal mentoring, work with enterprise-wide support functions, and opportunities to interact with senior leadership. Trainees develop a foundation suited to their skills in Commercial Industry Segments—small business, middle market, or construction—within CNA’s Underwriting Hub. They work with a diverse range of accounts across geographies, sizes, and levels of complexity, alongside their trainee cohort. Positions are based in either Chicago or Radnor, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). Trainees have the opportunity to collaborate with underwriting, risk control, and claims consultants to address clients’ evolving insurance needs. CNA underwriters select and price risks with profit potential. They evaluate businesses by reviewing industry, business, and government data, decide whether to accept or decline risks, price them, and maintain a steady flow of new and renewal business. CNA offers career pathing programs, including leadership tracks. The stated national base pay range for this job level in certain jurisdictions is $35,000 to $65,000 annually; compensation depends on factors including relevant experience, skills, certifications, and location.
