CNA’s Underwriting Trainee Program offers a career path for individuals interested in insurance, with hands-on experience and professional skills development. The curriculum covers insurance fundamentals; underwriting, professional, sales and marketing skills; technical training within disciplines; and broader industry knowledge. Training combines on-the-job and virtual learning, instructor-led instruction, testing, self-study, web-based courses and practical application. Trainees gain exposure to multiple lines of business and industry segments through mentoring, work with enterprise-wide support functions, and interact with senior leadership. The program builds a foundation aligned to the trainee’s skillset in Commercial Industry Segments—small business, middle market or construction—within CNA’s Underwriting Hub. Trainees work on a diverse range of accounts across geographies, sizes and levels of complexity, alongside members of their trainee cohort. Positions are in Chicago or Radnor, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). The role involves working with underwriting, risk control and claims consultants to meet clients’ insurance needs. Underwriters select and price risks with profit potential by evaluating industry, business and government data and deciding whether to accept or decline risks. They also maintain a steady flow of new and renewal business. CNA offers career-pathing and leadership-track opportunities.
