About The Position

This summer 2027 internship is designed for talented freshman or sophomore college students interested in the insurance industry. The intern will assist Staff Underwriters within the UW Shared Services department, which supports personal lines, commercial lines, and ag underwriting teams. The role offers project opportunities within the Underwriting department and potentially in other departments, with responsibilities to support business units. Interns will also participate in corporate activities to gain exposure to the industry, organization, and culture. The program follows an 80/10/10 approach: 80% on meaningful work and projects, 10% on learning and networking with employees in other areas, and 10% on shared internship experiences about culture, leadership, and business operations. This is an excellent opportunity to gain entry-level underwriting and insurance experience, along with general corporate real-world exposure.

Requirements

  • Be a current college student.
  • Majoring in business, finance, or agriculture is a plus.
  • A quick learner who is looking to learn new concepts and ideas.
  • Able to learn basic understanding of property insurance policies.
  • Familiarity with Outlook, Microsoft Word and Excel is preferred.
  • Must be detail oriented and willing to ask questions.
  • Be available to work 38.75 hours per week during Summer 2027.
  • Must be available to work in-person from our office in West Des Moines, Iowa.
  • Must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time, permanent basis.
  • Not require any type of immigration sponsorship now or in the future.

Responsibilities

  • Spend 80% of time performing meaningful work and project-based assignments within the department.
  • Spend 10% of time learning from and networking with employees in other areas of the organization.
  • Spend 10% of time participating in shared internship experiences that provide insight into culture, leadership, and business operations.
