About The Position

CNA’s Healthcare Underwriting Team is seeking a strategic and collaborative leader to guide the Aging Services Retail portfolio. The role shares leadership responsibility for part of the Aging Services Retail team and works in close partnership with the Aging Services Retail AVP to co-lead the team. The position supports business results, team development, portfolio performance, and strategic growth through CNA’s Retail distribution partners. The director oversees a portion of the team’s underwriters, develops employees, strengthens agency and broker relationships, and executes underwriting and portfolio strategies. The role also contributes to underwriting policy, marketing initiatives, operating plans, complex-risk decisions, pricing, and the adoption of new technologies and strategic initiatives. The position represents the team at industry events and reports business progress and emerging issues to senior management.

Requirements

Ability to co-lead, coach, and develop an underwriting team while fostering alignment, accountability, and collaboration.
Excellent communication, negotiation, and presentation skills, with the ability to interact effectively with internal and external business partners at all levels.
Senior-level technical and business management acumen, underwriting expertise, and knowledge of insurance and underwriting principles, practices, and procedures.
Strong knowledge of Retail distribution, agency and broker relationship management, and portfolio management strategies supporting profitable growth.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, including assessing complex risks, determining appropriate pricing, and managing multiple priorities and teams.
Ability to navigate ambiguity, lead through change, and support adoption of new technologies and strategic initiatives.
Creativity in resolving unique and challenging business problems.
Ability to achieve results through a proactive, long-term view of business goals and objectives.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.
MBA or equivalent experience.
Typically at least ten years of underwriting experience with a proven track record of results.

Responsibilities

Share leadership responsibility for the Aging Services Retail team, with direct oversight of a portion of its underwriters.
Partner with the Aging Services Retail AVP to co-lead the team in alignment with CNA’s strategic direction and business goals.
Coach, mentor, and develop underwriters, and contribute to underwriting training and development programs.
Drive profitable growth through Retail distribution partners and develop and manage key agency and broker relationships.
Participate with senior management in developing and executing underwriting policy, marketing initiatives, and business strategy.
Develop and implement operating plans to enhance business performance and achieve strategic objectives.
Execute portfolio management strategies to achieve growth and profitability targets.
Represent the Aging Services Retail team at industry conferences and events, and stay current on regulatory, market, competitive, and industry trends.
Collaborate with senior management on complex underwriting risks and apply advanced analysis to assess risk acceptability.
Determine appropriate pricing for complex risks based on financial and competitive analysis and regulatory requirements.
Report business progress, portfolio performance, and emerging issues to senior management.
Support the adoption of new technologies and strategic initiatives as a change agent for the Aging Services Retail team and CNA enterprise.
Exemplify excellence in underwriting, leadership, distribution, documentation, and team development.
