About The Position

Under the supervision of the Underwriting Manager, the Personal Lines Underwriter supports the interests of the company and its agents. Builds and maintains outstanding relationships with assigned agencies as well as internal units. Manages the assigned book of business to ensure department objectives of profitability, retention, efficiency and service are met. Provides support on all underwriting related matters, resolves problems and ensures compliance with both company and state mandated procedures. Acts as a source of underwriting knowledge for agents, new employees, and other departments.

Requirements

  • Two Years of personal lines experience is required
  • Strong knowledge of personal insurance products including auto, home, dwelling fire, and umbrella coverage.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word.
  • Excellent analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to manage priorities, implement improvement plans and monitor progress.
  • Ability to travel to assigned agencies.

Nice To Haves

  • 4-year college degree is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Analyze risk characteristics, loss history, and other underwriting information discovered through third-party vendor data to determine eligibility and pricing accuracy.
  • Evaluate and underwrite new and renewal business in accordance with published guidelines and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with agency partners to promote profitable growth and retention.
  • Document underwriting decisions thoroughly by clearly outlining rationale to support risk decisions, pricing updates, and exceptions based on data and underwriting judgment.
  • Effectively communicates decisions, guidelines, and requirements through written and verbal interactions with agent partners.
  • Maintains and follows through on diary items to obtain needed underwriting information from agents.
  • Respond to a high volume of calls and emails to meet productivity and time service goals.
  • Acts as a source of information and an advocate for all Underwriting systems including Power Desk and Safety Express.
  • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with fellow Underwriting staff and staff from various departments.
  • Performs other activities and projects as required.
